Apley farming update

Ripening barley, out riding Scout

Out riding our ponies is the best way of (even thought it’s rather incidental) keeping up to date with Apley farming progress. I had 2 blissful rides on Saturday – the warm sunshine was heavenly as we cantered past fields of barley turning yellow / white, but not yet golden. The grass elsewhere in places was so long it caught my stirrups – it was like that opening scene of in the film The Gladiators, when Russell Crowe walks through a field of corn.

Elderflower is everywhere – ready to be made into homemade elderflower cordial. The potatoes (a contractor farms them on Apley land) were in flower & being irrigated. The hedgerows were lined with pink campions, dog roses, bramble roses, the first hazel nuts, hemlock, cow parsley & vetch.

Apley Farm Shop celebrated Fathers’ Day this weekend – card making on Saturday & an incredible value £29.99 for a 2 course lunch for 2 adult & 2 children. We’re moving offices tomorrow, then finalising plans for Classic Car Sunday. The longest days of the year are my favourites of the 365, but at least after 21 June, there’s still July & August to enjoy.
